WANTED
MARSHALS & VOLUNTEERS
FOR TOY & EGG RUN EVENTS
EACH XMAS & EASTER TIME

If we do not meet the required number of marshals that we need,
then this may well result in the run being cancelled or postponed
.

A STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Due to the rising pressures of organising the Toy & Egg runs over the last few years with
only a small number of people actually involved with the organisation side of the events, we
feel that we need new members to join the committee / charity organisation. This will not
only ease the workload but also bring in new ideas & the manpower to carry them out.
Otherwise the future of this event is very much in doubt.
It would be sad to think the 30th Egg run could well be the last.
A Middleton, Chairman, Stoke on Trent Bikers Charity / Star Bikers

WE ARE LOOKING FOR MORE MARSHALS & SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS TO HELP ON RUN DAY

There are several ways of letting us know you wish to offer your help.

  1. Leave details on our forum.
We also welcome enquiries if you are part of a bikers club or organisation or just an individual & wish to offer your help, leave a point of contact & we will then get back to you shortly.
  2. Phone & leave your details,
Call (01782) 414831 - there is an answering service on this number if nobody is available to take your details in person.
  3. Write to us
or if you refer you could simply download an application form to become an event marshal (click here) & post the completed forms to us (Postal address provided on the contact page & it’s also shown on the form).
  4. Speak with one the committee group if you spot them out & about.
You could also attend one of our weekly meetings which are held on Wednesday nights (9.30pm) in the Greyhound in Penkhull & offer your services.
  5. Fill in a Form
You could also fill in a form if you spot us on our stall at any motorcycle show or similar event we attend. Forms will also soon be left to collect in many of the local bike shops - you can find these shops listed on our local dealers page. Simply pick up a form & pop it in the post once completed.
  6. Offer to help
If you have marshaled one of our events previously - As a VERY last resort, turn up on the day of the run & pester some of the people already in Marshals bibs or police officers.... although we would prefer you to contact us 1st or come along in advance & attend our pre run meeting for a full briefing & to be allocated your point.

Experience is preferred but not essential. You will be fully briefed & if required, trained. Anyone can apply to be a marshal or a volunteer.
You don't need to be a motorcyclist to apply. Non-motorcycle owners are also welcome to enquire if they wish.
Some marshal positions could be better controlled by a car user or a number of pedestrians.

The only thing we point out is that it is a voluntary role, but it is one that goes down great on your CV or in your club meeting room as you will be part of one of the UK's longest established motorcycle charity events & probably the UK's largest.

Run support volunteers

We also as well as looking for marshals are on the lookout for volunteers & fundraisers to assist on the day of the runs in other ways, this role may be more suited to someone who perhaps doesn’t ride but still wants to get involved.
We need helpers to.:-

  • Help coordinate the start point
  • Help gather up or position cones & signs where needed
  • Help with collections or donations
  • Help collect Toys / Eggs back at Kings Hall & at Britannia Stadium
  • Help to distribute tickets for raffles
  • Help supervise the loading / unloading & transport of the donated gifts
  • Observe & ensure the safe passage of the parade & the days procedings

You could also if you wish, opt in to attend meetings or discussions with the committee leaders & put forward any ideas you may have to improve or enhance the runs & the day-to-day running of the charity.

Marshalling guidelines.

We are in serious need to increase the number of marshals. In this day & age there is a strong emphasis on being put on Health & safety, for this reason we need to utilise as many marshals as we can get hold of & also free up duties for marshals who are currently doing more than 1 point or several roles at once. As marshals you are free to join the parade once the entire parade has successfully passed you at your duty point.

So what is involved in being a marshal? This simple guide (below) should help:-

  • You will & should be fully briefed on your duties prior to the event. You will be allocated a point of duty to control.
In certain cases some marshals may be allocated 2 points to control.
  • At the start of the parade marshal crews will be dispatched to their relevant points where each marshal or the team marshaling their point must wait for the parade to pass fully before leaving this point.
  • All marshals will be issued with reflective jackets prior to the event - you must wear a reflective jacket at all times whilst the parade is taking place.
All reflective jackets issued must be handed back in at the end of the parade at the Kings hall.
  • A check of the route prior to the parade taking place will be made to ensure no hiccups or problems or other wise are likely to occur, you will be advised & briefed on any such problems.
  • A Police motorcycle or vehicle will ride ahead of the main parade. This motorcycle will stop at EACH marshal point & alert the marshal crew at that point that the parade is almost at that point of the route & advise of any problems or any last minute changes or diversions to the route if there is an emergency. The police motorcycle will stop the flow of traffic for you & then the Rider / Police officer will ask you (the marshal) to take over the point & in turn they will ride to the next point & repeat the process. Marshals must not stop traffic without police assistance unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Once the parade has passed your marshal point & the chasing Police patrol & the collection bus or truck have passed you, then you may proceed to let waiting motorists move on. If you wish you may now join the parade or Marshal the parade further as an outrider as the parade continues & arrive with the parade at the finish point. You can also make your own way back to Kings Hall if you so wish.
  • Upon arrival at Kings hall ensure maximum safety & also if required you may be asked to help with gathering donations or collecting presents & gifts as well as distributing raffles.
  • If you opt to marshal alongside the main parade or as an outrider, please ensure all motorcycles & participants are not doing stunts or tricks which are likely to endanger the safety of the parade... if you see such an act you are initially asked to issue verbal warning to the rider, or if you wish you may make a note of the riders registration number & report the offense to a police officer as soon as convenient.
  • You are also required to ensure pedestrians or other vehicles do not become mixed or entangled within the parade, The route is now subject to road closure orders during the time of the parade & the Highway code states that if you are a designated marshal you are allowed to enforce the road closure order while that order is in place, to which motorists must comply with your request. You have the legal power to stop traffic once the Police have asked you to do so & we urge all marshals to report any road traffic violations from motorists failing to conform or comply with your instructions to a Police officer - please make sure to note down the registration number of any offending vehicle.
